In the mood for sushi but don’t want to spend a million bucks?
Check out Sushi Raw at Mission and Silver. The fish is incredibly fresh
and the prices are as reasonable as the fish is fresh!
I happened upon it one day at lunch - two of us ate plenty o’ sushi for
a shade under $20 from nice dinnerware and cool teacups. We sat at the
bar and watched the sushi chef perform miracles with slices of fish,
sticky rice, sheets of Nori and a little bamboo mat.
The menu is straightforward and well executed. Sushi Raw may not have
the fanciful combinations of some of the other local sushi joints, but
they stick with the basics and perform them almost flawlessly. That
said, there’s plenty of variety to choose from.
My hungry teenagers and I have tried the chicken, beef and salmon
teriyaki; the sauce has the right amount of sweetness; the tempura,
even on delivery, is crisp and light and perfectly cooked. I vouch for
the Spicy Tuna roll and the Spider roll. The Rainbow roll offers a bit
of everything: a California roll topped with avocado and a variety of
fresh fish. We’ve tried the udon - the broth is excellent and the
noodles are practically a meal by themselves.
A three item Bento Box combo (plus soup, salad and rice) for a smidge
under $13 will overstuff even a healthy growing teenage boy. And, I’d
definitely order the Tuna Poki again. Hmmm… maybe tonight!
… and here’s the kicker - you can order online and they’ll deliver with
a $20 minimum. What could be better than freshly made sushi delivered
to your door? Nirvana! If you order enough on the delivery, they’ll
throw in a small California roll or Spicy Tuna roll. No coupon
necessary! Ordering strategically with the use of the freebies can feed
a small family for a modest sum.
PS - Sushi Raw now has another location at 682 Haight Street!
