McMahon This
little sub shop is one of the bedrock
businesses in Glen
Park
Village. It's on Diamond across from the
BART station, by all the nail salons. These folks are friendly,
accommodating,
and they serve the best subs around at prices you thought were long
gone.
I stick to the subs-- good, fresh, traditional fillings, sloppy
mayo, and
your choice of the trimmings, all on a big toasted soft roll.
What's not
to like? Certainly can't beat the price! A big veggie sub is a flat $5
bucks.
Most everything else is in that price range too. The
menu is fairly varied for this little
shop, offering sandwiches, burgers and veggie burgers ($3.50) and
teriyaki
rice plates $5.75. They make my favorite kind of french fries: fresh,
mildly
crispy, perfectly done and not at all greasy. There are onion rings,
egg rolls
and quesadillas too. They also feature some interesting takes on side
fare,
including “cheese puffs” which are little cheese balls pinched into a
wonton
wrapper and deep fried. The kids really like these, as well as the
teriyaki
sandwiches and the rib-stickin' cheeseburgers hot off the
griddle.
And what a bonus, Viking Sub has a good, old-fashioned ice cream case
offering
about 8 different choices of 'cream for an unheard-of one dollar per
scoop! The grills, counters and work surfaces looked clean and tidy when I've been there, although the few tables in the little shop often look a little sticky. Decorations leave something to be desired, as they've got a lot of those salmon-tinged photos of teriyaki chicken sandwiches and stir fry plates tacked to the walls. I like getting the food to go and eating it at home or outside somewhere. You can call in your order and swoop in to pick it up when it’s ready. I
give the folks who run it BIG points for opening their store back up
one evening for three pathetic souls (myself and the boys) who arrived
for a
meal after the shop was closed and cleaned up. The floor was mopped,
the
griddle cleaned and cool, and the fry baskets already stowed for next
day --
but when they saw the hangdog expressions of the boys
staring dolefully at
the "Closed" sign on the door, the proprietors cheerfully waved us in
and hurried over to unlock the door. They fired up the kitchen again
and 15
minutes later we all went away happy with an armload of fresh burgers,
fries
and sandwiches wrapped in white deli paper wrapping.
